Platteklip Gorge

Quirky facts

Once a year, brave and crazy hikers run up and down Platteklip Gorge as often as they can for the annual Charity Challenge (www.charitychallenge.co.za), one of the many running races on Cape Town's sports agenda!

Mountain of the Sea

The indigenous people of the Cape, the Khoisan, referred to Table Mountain (which is estimated to be 260 million years old) as Hoerikwaggo. This means 'mountain of the sea'. South Africa's most famous natural landmark, one of the Seven new Wonders of Nature, is also the only mountain in the world to have a constellation of stars (“Mensa”, which means 'table'in Latin) named after it.
