Our Hikes

Do you want to hike Table Mountain, Lion's Head or Devil's Peak with a qualified mountain guide? Captivate the Cape Hiking Tours has a wide range of mountain hikes on offer. Some trails are suitable for people who aren't keen on technical hikes whilst others are perfect for more experienced mountaineers. Please find a selection of hikes below.

Platteklip Gorge (650m above sea level) is the most popular Table Mountain trail, perfect for hikers who don't like technical hikes. Families also like this route, which zigzags up a narrow gorge to the top, making it the most direct trail up. If you are lucky, you may spot a Tahr (mountain goat) or Caracal (our own big cat)!

Quirky fact: The first woman to hike Platteklip was Lady Anne Barnard. She did so in 1797, along with two naval officers, a couple of servants and slaves (straining under the weight of cold meats, Port, Madeira and Cape wine). She was dressed in her husband’s trousers, her shoes tied on with tape and carrying an umbrella.

COST: From R1200pp (based on 2 pax or more). This excludes a single ticket down with the Cable Car*. Contact us today to book your hike!

Lion's Head (669m above sea level) is everyone’s favourite little (well, not-so-little) mountain. It is the perfect outing for a sunrise and sunset hike, featuring well-kept winding paths and varying views at each turn! You will likely see Rock Hyraxes (Dassies) on top, and perhaps even a Cape Genet!

Quirky fact: Written records reveal that hippos, elephants, lions, hyaenas and leopards lived in Cape Town during the late 1600s. The last lion on Lion’s Head was shot in 1802, and the last leopard sometime in the 1820s.

COST: From R1100pp (based on 2 pax or more). Contact us today to book your hike!

India Venster (700m above sea level), overlooking Cape Town, is a great hike for experienced and adventurous hikers. It involves scrambling over rocks and requires a good head for heights. Adventure guaranteed! En route, you may spot some climbers and abseilers (repellers), maybe a Tahr or two.

Quirky fact: The India Venster trail on Table Mountain gets is name from the Indian subcontinent-shaped ravine. The “Venster” (window in Afrikaans) refers to a viewpoint that is framed like a window by massive rocks.

COST: From R1400pp (based on 2 pax or more), This excludes a single ticket down with the Cable Car*. Contact us today to book your hike!

Situated on the Atlantic side of Table Mountain, the Kasteelspoort trail (900m above sea level) is suitable for hikers who aren't keen on scrambling. The views along this 12 Apostles route are worth the long trek, which features a pit-stop on Breakfast Rock and wind-dependent, the Instagram worthy Surfboard.

Quirky facts: Kasteelspoort (Castle Gate in Afrikaans) is home to remnants of the old cable way system that was used to ship supplies for the construction of the five water reservoirs on top of Table Mountain in the 1800s.

COST: From R1650pp (based on 2 pax or more). Rate excludes a single ticket down with the Cable Car. Contact us today to book your hike!

Imagine navigating through an intricate network of cracks in the rock to get to the tear-inducing viewpoints and the super-secret ‘Africa Rock’! Tranquillity Cracks (810m above sea level) is not a hard hike but a long one, encompassing the entire pipe track, up Corridor Ravine and down Kasteelspoort after a stop at the Dive Board!

Quirky fact: The Tranquillity Cracks is a secret labyrinth of narrow slits and fractures deep in the rocks. These are home to endangered and indigenous Yellow Wood trees. This hidden gem is a true oasis of tranquillity!

COST: R1850pp (based on 2 pax or more). Contact us today to book your hike!

Skeleton Gorge (900m above sea level) is the most popular hiking route up the eastern side of Table Mountain. It is an exciting hike featuring thick indigenous forest, ladders and a beautiful surprise when at the summit. We will take the Cable Car down, unless it is not running due to strong winds. In that case we are hiking down Nursery Ravine.

Quirky Fact: The origins of the name are unknown, but one can only assume that a human skeleton was found in the ravine sometime after the 1850s. This is when routes other than Platteklip Gorge opened up.

COST: From R1650pp (based on 2 pax or more). Rate excludes a single ticket down with the Cable Car. Contact us today to book your hike!

Because of its eco-sensitivity, Orangekloof (600m above sea level) is the only restricted area on Table Mountain that requires you to hike with a permit and a guide. It is a pristine part of the mountain featuring pristine Afro-montane forests, cascading waterfalls and crystal clear rock pools This piece of heaven will leave you breathless!

Quirky fact:SANParks only allows 12 people per day into Orange Kloof. This makes this hike even more magical and spectacular than it already is! This hikes needs to be booked in advance as permits are scarce!
